Artist-In-Residence Program
Hawkeye Herman, April 7-11, 2008
The Blues For Youth Program of the Santa Barbara Blues Society is bringing award-winning blues educator Michael “Hawkeye” Herman to Carpinteria Middle School from April 7 through 11 to teach the students about the United States’ blues, America’s original musical genre. Carpinteria Middle School principal Felicia Sexsmith is hosting Herman’s Blues for Youth Residency program.

Hawkeye Herman was called “One of America's finest acoustic guitarists and blues educators” by the Cascade Blues Association. He is a recipient of the prestigious "Keeping the Blues Alive" Award for achievement in education from the Memphis based Blues Foundation in Memphis. Herman’s dynamic performances have won him a faithful following, and he leads a very active touring schedule of concerts, school programs and workshops in the United States and abroad.

2008 marks Hawkeye's 30th year of "Blues in the Schools" programs. He began this effort long before most blues support organizations and festivals even existed. Since that time he has helped to initiate educational programs for many blues societies and has single-handedly introduced blues music workshops and children's programs to major festivals. In the past 30 years Hawkeye has presented his Blues In The Schools programs in over 500 schools, in 22 states, five nations, and to over 1/2 million students.

This April, Hawkeye will be in the Santa Barbara area for the SBBS, where he will be doing 'cross curriculum' work at Carpinteria Middle School for a week. Hawkeye will be teaching the English classes about various blues poetry formats, and teach them how to write blues songs/poetry. Then he'll teach the chorus class about blues singing and the band class about blues music & how to play/arrange it. The culmination of the residency will be a free community Friday night program/concert for students/parents/teachers/and the public in which the chorus and band will play/sing/perfrom (under Hawkeye's direction) the songs that were written by the English classes. This is a fine example of 'cross curriculum.'

The Santa Barbara Blues Society’s Blues For Youth program is supported by the Society's annual auctions as well as grants by the Santa Barbara Foundation and the Blues Music Foundation. Its goal is to help fill the void left by budget cuts to music education programs in the public schools. In addition to artist-in-residence programs such as Hawkeye Herman’s, the Society also offers ongoing programs bringing the authentic blues tradition to Santa Barbara County’s schools.
