Hailing originally from Southampton, England, Carl Sonny Leyland was a proficient pianist by his mid-teens. From 1988 to 1997 he lived in New Orleans, soaking up blues history and Big Easy vibes. Carl toured with famed Texas blues group Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets before subsequently being “discovered” by SBBS co-founder Las Kiraly and then moving to Southern CA.

After a stint with Big Sandy & His Flyrite Boys in CA, Carl formed his own trio, which continues to tour while he also performs as a valued session musician. Carl has released multiple acclaimed albums and is a dazzling purveyor of oldtime jazz, ragtime, and rockabilly as well as blues. He hasn’t played for the SBBS since 2000; the long wait is over!
